CUSTOM MATTRESSES

There are many situations that require a custom mattress set. From Antique Beds, RV's, Cabin Cruisers, Horse Trailers, Sleepers in Tractor Trailers, Campers, etc. The most common situation is an Antique Bed. Most of us refer to an odd size bed (not a classical Twin or Full as a Three Quarter” (3/4) bed. This is a generic statement indicating a size ranging from twin (38x75) to full (54x75). This comes from the old classification of a twin being called a half (1/2) and therefore a Three Quarter beds falls between a half size and a full size. Most of these Three Quarter beds were manufactured in the 17Th and 18Th century and into the early 19Th century as well. Most were designed with a family in mind and the size was dictated by the room size and/or the size of the person the bed was being manufactured for. In some cases a bed was made by the handy man in the family out in the barn or woodshed. These could and did lead to a multitude of sizes, shapes and constructions. All these aspects must be considered when producing a mattress set to fit the existing Odd Size bedstead.

Another source of Odd Size beds are from the Swedish or European bedstead imports. These also come in a wide range of sizes mostly between a Queen (60x80) and a King (76x80). Most are a platform design where only the mattress is required. In considering a mattress for a platform bed you should look to the plush or ultra plush mattress as all the comfort has to come from the mattress as the hard platform relieves the need for a box spring.
